The Fatal Question

Bespoke Interactive Sculpture Engineering for Street Doctors’ “The Fatal Question”

MACHINESHOP engineered and fabricated the advanced interactive physical systems for “The Fatal Question”, a hard-hitting educational campaign for the youth knife-crime charity StreetDoctors. Developed alongside top-tier creative partners, the project addresses the chilling, real-world misconception among teenagers that it is possible to stab someone in a “safe area” without risking their life.

Our special projects workshop brought this vital message to life in a secondary school gym by building a custom, life-sized human sculpture that serves as the centrepiece for the entire experience.

Advanced Electronic Engineering & Interactive Practical FX

To confront young audiences with the reality of weapon offenses, the project required precise software integration and flawless mechanical coordination. When teenagers touch or point out a “safe” body part on the statue, our custom internal rigs trigger immediate, sobering feedback:

  • Interactive Laser Projection Systems: Custom-integrating laser diode networks inside the human sculpture that emit crisp, visible beams from the selected body area.
  • Robust Touring Rig Architecture: Building a durable, self-contained framework designed to withstand rapid packing, transport, and setup as the installation tours schools, clubs, and youth colleges across the UK.
  • Seamless Art Department Integration: Working hand-in-hand with the production designer to completely hide all electronic controls, power distribution, and functional cabling inside the custom-sculpted anatomy.
